Call for Proposals for Short-Term Scientific Missions within COST Action IS0904 : “European architecture beyond Europe”

The COST Action IS0904 : “European architecture beyond Europe : Sharing Research and Knowledge on Dissemination Processes, Historical Data and Material Legacy (19th-20th centuries)” invites proposals for Short-Term Scientific Missions (STSM).

Objectives

Short-Term Scientific Missions (STSM) are aimed at strengthening the existing networks by allowing scientists to go to an institution or laboratory in another COST member state to foster collaboration, to learn new techniques or use instruments and/or methods not available in their own institution/laboratory. They are particularly (yet not exclusively) intended for young scientists.

Topics

COST Action IS0904 “European architecture beyond Europe” (www.architecturebeyond.eu) is organized into four Working Groups (WG).

WG 1: Actors and networks of expertise
WG 2: The printed media and the construction of a canon
WG 3: Documenting transnational architecture
WG 4: Conceptualizing an infrastructure for collaborative research

The Action especially welcomes proposals that enhance collaborative research within the network, with excellence remaining a major assessment criterion. Emphasis is on activities that will contribute to research on one of the topics of the 4 Action’s WGs. The applicants should specify, when submitting their application, to which of the 4 WGs their proposed mission belongs to. They should furthermore show clearly in their applications how the planned activities and the selection of the Hosting Institution will contribute to this aim.

The Applicant, Home and Host Institution

The selection of the applicant is the responsibility of the Management Committee (MC) of the Action. The Applicant should normally be engaged in a programme of research as a post graduate student or postdoctoral fellow or be employed in an institution of a COST Country having accepted the MoU of the Action.
A STSM may only be approved:
- from a home institution in a COST participating country to a host institution in another COST participating country or to a formally approved host institution in a non-COST country.
- from a formally approved home institution in a Near Neighbour country to a host institution in a COST participating country.
The Applicant is responsible for obtaining the agreement of the Host Institution, before submitting his/her application.

Duration

Short-Term Scientific Missions, minimum one week (5 working days), maximum 3 months, shall be made within the time frame of the operation identified in the proposal and within the period of the Action. For Early Stage Researchers (less than PhD + 10 years) the Management Committee may approve an extension to a duration beyond 3 months, but normally not more than 6 months in total.

Finance

The financial support is a contribution to the costs of a STSM and may not necessarily cover all the costs in each case. The grant should normally cover only travel and subsistence. The financial contribution for a STSM will be a fixed grant based on the Applicant’s budget request and the evaluation of the application by the STSM assessment committee. An STSM grant shall normally not exceed EUR 2.500 (EUR 3 500 for Early Stage Researchers).

Application

The applicant should: 1. fill the online application form at www.cost.eu and 2. send a detailed Work Plan (max. 5 pages) and full Curriculum Vitae to the STSM coordinator of this Action Assoc. Prof. dr. Tom Avermaete. (T.L.P.Avermaete)

Deadline

There is no specific submission deadline: applications can be submitted continuously. Once the application file – consisting of a) the online application form and b) the detailed work plan and curriculum vitae – is complete, it will be assessed by the STSM Assessment Panel which advices the Management Committee on whether or not to fund the application.

After the STSM

After completion of the STSM the grantee is required to submit to the Host and MC chair a short scientific report on the visit within 4 weeks after his/her stay. The grantee is also required to produce a ‘poster’ and a ‘slideshow’ that illustrate the outcome of the STSM. Reports, posters, and slides may be published in the Action web site and displayed at MC meetings. Templates for posters and slides are provided here .

Additional information and rules

Applicants are strongly encouraged to read the STSM chapter of the COST Vademecum. Further information on the Action can be found at www.architecturebeyond.eu
